Create a Memorable Outdoor Experience with Your Family

Here in Canada we are celebrating Family Day and it’s a welcome break for many. It reminds us of the importance of family and gives us another opportunity to spend some quality time with our clan – big or small.

While the extra day is appreciated, you can take any weekend and turn it into a special occasion where you spend time with loved ones. You don’t have to have a long weekend or leave town to have fun. Discover your own backyard adventures by looking around for family-oriented local events or – even better – make some of your own right there at home. Want to make it even more memorable? Add outdoor grilling to cap off an activity-packed day.

Looking for some ideas on what you can do? Start by scouting out local family-oriented activities that are happening in your community and identify a few that you think might be suitable. Some events may be free to the public; others may have nominal admission fees. Take in as many of them as you feel your group can handle, keeping in mind that young ones will tire more easily than their older siblings.

You can also check out local museums or art galleries. Perhaps everyone would enjoy an afternoon of swimming, skiing or skating? Some communities often host winter carnivals that are jam-packed full of fun and games for kids of all ages. If you’d prefer to stay closer to home, there are still plenty of options. Build a snow fort in the backyard. Explore the neighbourhood. Or cozy up inside for a movie marathon or some old-fashioned fun with board games.

Whatever you decide to do, the day will be made that much better if you cap it off by firing up the grill and cooking up some family-friendly cuisine. Try out a new recipe or serve up some tried and true favorites. When you’re grilling outdoors in the chilly temperatures, there are just a few things you need to remember: dress for the weather; preheat your grill a bit longer than usual; make dishes with shorter cooking times (chicken or pork); and use the snow to keep beverages chilled.

However you decide to spend the day, do your best to make it an enjoyable blend of adventure, good food and memorable times. That way, you can be sure everyone will want to repeat the fun and that’s a win-win for everyone.
